Why this exists
We tried mats, high-sided trays, and a closet with the door cracked. The litter still made it to the kitchen. The trays were also the reason the apartment smelled like an apartment with a cat in it.
What it does about it
Entry is through a grooved lid on top, so litter falls off the paws on the way out and lands back inside. The enclosed body holds odor in and a carbon filter sits in the lid. A pull-out drawer means scooping without lifting the lid off.

When this is the wrong product
Not right for kittens under six months, senior cats, or any cat with arthritis or hip trouble — the climb in is a real barrier. Not right for cats over about 20 lb either; they will not turn around comfortably.
